Achieving Site Recovery and Backup in Azure

Business continuity is the need of the hour. We are living in a time when everyone expects 100% uptime. This blog caters to users of Microsoft Azure and is intended to help them achieve disaster recovery and back-up for a VM.

Achieving Site Recovery

Azure makes it very simple to configure disaster recovery. Once you have selected the Virtual Machine for which you need to achieve site recovery, click on Disaster Recovery from the Operations section on the left side panel.

In the disaster recovery screen, choose the “Target region” and click on “Review + Start replication”. After reviewing the target, storage and replication settings, click on Start Replication as shown in the below screenshot.

Azure will check the replication health and will show the status as “Enabling protection” while quickly changing it to “Initial replication is in progress”.

As soon as the initial replication is started it creates an infrastructure view as below.

The status shows as protected after completion of synchronization, post which both Failover tab and Test Failover tab pop up.

Click on Test Failover, Cleanup Test Failover and then click on failover. Select “Latest (lowest RPO)” and select the checkbox for “Shut down machine before beginning failover”.

We can see here that separate Resource Groups for Site recovery, Original VM and Failover VM are created. Although we have failover the VM into different region, i.e West US, still the IP remains the same in both VMs by making one VM shut down.

Back up on Azure

For creating a backup, click on backup from the Operations section on the left side panel.

Choose Create New Recovery services vault, enter the name of an existing resource group or create a new one. Once this is done you need to create or edit a new policy and click on Enable Backup. In this example we have entered the Resource Services Vault name as Vault 777, resource group is BCDRRG and have set the backup frequency as Daily.

Enabling backup creates a new Recovery services vault “vault 777” as shown below.

In the BCDRRG resource group select “vault 777” and click the + Backup icon. This takes you to a screen which lets you configure the workload and gives the option to select what you want to back up. Once these configurations are done, click on Backup to choose the backup policy and Items to Backup as depicted in the below Screenshot.

After clicking on OK, Azure will take you to the below screen. On this screen choose Backup Now. Once the backup is complete, Azure will show Backup Pre-check as passed and Last backup status as Success along with the timestamp.

Clicking on Restore VM will give options to choose a restore point and to configure Restore Configuration based on the following parameters::

  1. Restore Type – Create Virtual Machine
  2. Virtual Machine name – labvmbackup
  3. Resource Group – BCDRRG
  4. Virtual Network – BCDRRG-vnet (BCDRRG)
  5. Subnet – default
  6. Storage Account – bcdrrgdiag (StandardLRS)

Clicking on OK post configuration will show a checkmark against the restore point and restore configuration tab. Once this is done click on Restore and let Microsoft Azure do its magic.

Once the backup VM is created you will see the labvm backup in the Virtual Machine tab of Azure. Clicking on the backup allow you to check Alerts and Jobs, Backup Status, Summary as well as the Restore points.
